Bahrain is located on the Persian Gulf, surrounded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It is considered to be a liberal nation compared to others in the area making it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. Because of the influx of visitors Bahrain is very worldly wise.

Manama is the capital of Bahrain. It is a large city with many five star hotels. There is a large souq in Manama where you can find almost anything for sale from fancy watches to tailored clothes. Part of the fun of shopping in the souq is bargaining with the shopkeepers. It is so prevalent that it is expected.

Bahrain is one of the few countries where you are advised to rent a car when on vacation. Most of the sites you will want to see are outside of Manama and a car will be cost efficient and helpful.

The Bahrain Fort is an 11th century wonder. It was re-discovered during the first archeological dig undertaken by the Bahrain government. The Bahrain National Museum is a wonderful way to learn the history of the area and includes relics from local archeological digs. You may find the Garden of Eden while on holiday here. Many scholars believe that it was located in what is now Bahrain.

Unlike other Arab countries, alcohol is allowed in Bahrain. It is not available in restaurants and there are not bars on the street but you will be able to have drinks at any of the better hotels in the city. People from other Arab countries also flock to Bahrain to indulge in a little rest and relaxation.

While in Bahrain you should dress modestly. In town it is appropriate to keep your limbs covered. While not illegal, public displays of affection are frowned upon. Once you leave the city for the beaches the rules are relaxed and beachwear is the normal dress.

The Bahrain International Airport is located in Muharraq, a few km east of Manama, the capital. It is the hub for the national airline, Gulf Air. It is very easy to book flights from London with many options available. The airport also offers showers and beds for those with layovers. There is a small price for both. You will need a visa to enter the country. It can be arranged ahead of time or applied for upon arrival. No matter where you arrive from you will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of Bahrain.
